Art News! The Diamond Encrusted Skull by Damien Hirst on Display at Palazzo Vecchio

FLORENCE.- The diamond encrusted skull, For the Love of God, by British artist Damien Hirst, which gained iconic status following its first exhibition in 2007, is on display at Palazzo Vecchio in Florence from 26 November 2010 to 1 May 2011.

Promoted by the Comune di Firenze, Assessorato alla Cultura e alla Contemporaneità and the Musei Civici Fiorentini, the event was conceived by Memoria srl, is curated by Francesco Bonami and is being produced and organised by Arthemisia Group.

For the Love of God is a life-size cast of a human skull in platinum, entirely covered by 8,601 VVS to flawless pavé-set diamonds, weighing a total of 1,106.18 carats. Set into the forehead is a large pear-shaped pink diamond, known as the Skull Star Diamond. The teeth are those of the original skull, which was purchased by Hirst in London, and dates back to the eighteenth-century.

Describe this piece of art to me. What kind of art is it? What elements of art does this piece have within in it that we have talked about before?


Today we are working on translating our sketch of our fantasy landscape onto our larger piece of paper to begin our tempera painting. Remember we are emphasizing our foreground, middle ground, and horizon line/eye level in this piece of art. The group will also review how we use warm/cool colors and illusion of depth in our paintings.

Today we are translating our futuristic furniture design sketches to larger sheets of paper. We are remembering to use scale and proportion in our designs to make them as realistic as possible.

What is a fantasy landscape? 

A fantasy landscape is just like any other landscape, a painting or drawing that takes places outdoors, but a fantasy landscape uses things we would not normally find in nature. Those things we would find there would be unusual colors for the grass, water, or sky with massive towering castles, the universe in the space, aliens floating in the clouds, as well as dragons, fairies, and other magical creatures hanging around.

We will look at images of landscape photographs and sketch one of the photos to recreate one into a fantasy landscape painting. While looking at the images we will look for foreground, middle ground, and horizon line/eye level. The group will also review how we use warm/cool colors and illusion of depth in our paintings.

What is furniture design?
Furniture is the mass noun for the movable objects ('mobile' in Latin languages) intended to support various human activities such as seating and sleeping in beds, to hold objects at a convenient height for work using horizontal surfaces above the ground, or to store things. Storage furniture such as a nightstand often makes use of doors, drawers, shelves and locks to contain, organize or secure smaller objects such as clothes, tools, books, and household goods.

What is interior design?
Interior design is a multi–faceted profession in which creative and technical solutions are applied within a structure to achieve a built interior environment.
The interior design process follows a systematic and coordinated methodology, including research, analysis, and integration of knowledge into the creative process, whereby the needs and resources of the client are satisfied to produce an interior space that fulfills the project goals

Day One: 11-29-10 
Furniture Design

The Student will sketch a design for futuristic piece of furniture that uses scale and proportion in pencil on white 8.5 x 11 inch paper. Furniture Designers Charles and Ray Eames will be used as inspiration. 

Who are Charles and Ray Eames? 



Charles and Ray Eames were a husband and wife duo who made their mark in the 1950s. They began their careers staging television shows and magazines but later moved into architecture and furniture designs. They are best known for their chairs which feature organic shapes and lines. 









The Assignment: Sketch your design on 8.5 x 11 inches for your futuristic furniture design. Use Charles and Ray Eames as your inspiration with their organic shapes and lines. Remember to consider where your furniture will go and how it will be used.

Creative Jobs/Careers in the Arts 


GLE: The student will learn about and create art work based upon but not limited to the following creative jobs: Animators, Illustrators, Cake Decorators, Costume Designers, Tattoo Artists, Art Teachers, and Hair Artists through readings, videos, and images.

DAY ONE: 11-29-10 - Animators and Illustrators 

The student will learn about animators and illustrators such as Takashi Murakami, and Nara through videos and images by creating a creature based upon Murakami and Nara's art work.

What is an animator? 
    An animator is an artist who creates multiple images that give an illusion of movement called animation when displayed in rapid sequence; the images are called frames and key frames. Animators can work in a variety of fields including film, television, video games, and the internet. Usually, an animation piece requires the collaboration of several animators. The methods of creating the images or frames for an animation piece depends on the animators' artistic styles and their field.

What is an illustrator?
    An Illustrator is a graphic artist who specializes in enhancing writing by providing a visual representation that corresponds to the content of the associated text. The illustration may be intended to clarify complicated concepts or objects that are difficult to describe textually.

Illustrations have been used in advertisements, greeting cards, posters, books, magazines and newspapers. A cartoon illustration can add humor to humorous essays.

 Who is Takashi Murakami? 


Takashi Murakami is a Japanese Artist who is primarily known for his very anime, also known as Japanese Animation, style art. He has illustrated and animated many pieces of art for people such as the clothier Louis Vuitton and the rapper Kanye West that use very imaginative creatures.

Who is Nara?

 Nara Yoshimito is an artist who works closely with Takashi Murakami in Japan. He rose up in Japan's art world during the Japanese Pop Art Movement of the 1990s. He has worked on albums for Japanese music artists such as Shonen Knife as well as having his images go many products such as notebooks and folders.

The Assignment: 

Illustrate your own creature in the style of Murakami or Nara in marker on 11 x 8 paper.
