GLE: The student will learn about spatial relationships by creating a fantasy based landscape tempera painting using foreground, middle ground, and horizon line/eye level. The students will also review warm/cool colors and illusion of depth in their paintings.

SPI: 6.2 spi.4, 6.2 spi.5

What is a fantasy landscape?

A fantasy landscape is just like any other landscape, a painting or drawing that takes places outdoors, but a fantasy landscape uses things we would not normally find in nature. Those things we would find there would be unusual colors for the grass, water, or sky with massive towering castles, the universe in the space, aliens floating in the clouds, as well as dragons, fairies, and other magical creatures hanging around.

Who are some artists who have created these types of paintings?

Frank Frazetta

The Assignment:
We will look at images of landscape photographs and sketch one of the photos to recreate one into a fantasy landscape painting. While looking at the images we will look for foreground, middle ground, and horizon line/eye level. The group will also review how we use warm/cool colors and illusion of depth in our paintings.
