7th Grade: Cubes, Cubes! Why did it have to be cubes? 01-03-11

Pablo Picasso - Still Life with Cherries 

Warm Up: 
Describe to me a type of food that is made up entirely of cubes. 



Vocab:

Shape: a two dimensional object such as a square, circle, or rectangle

Form: a three dimensional object such as a cube, sphere, or rectangle

Square:  four equal sides and four equal angles.

Cube:  a three dimensional box with four equal sides and four equal angles.

Pablo Picasso: One of the founding fathers of the art style known as cubism.

Still Life:  A group of objects placed together in a single picture. They often were used to show a person's wealth or to tell a story. 

 Dry Medium: An artist tool that is applied dry and does not involve the use of water.

The Assignment: 

GLE: 
The student will work from a still life of junk forms, in pencil, of cubic forms as well as discuss the artist Picasso with his art work the Still Life with Cherries to help in their understanding of forms.

The Artist: 
Pablo Picasso


Pablo Picasso was born and raised in Spain but later moved to France. He is one of the founding fathers of the art style known as Cubism. He had a long and fruitful art career working in the a variety of different mediums such as pencil, ceramic, oil paint, and print making. He is described as being ahead of his time as an artist even after his death in 1971. 
 
The Assignment: 
  
Today's Mission: 
We will begin to sketch our junk food still life using the image provided above. It uses our form of the week, the cube, along with its cousin the sphere through out the image. Make sure to pay close attention to the demo so you can understand how the image is sketch so you can do the same yourself.
